How to Go Solar
There are 2 ways as a homeowner, you can choose to go solar. The first is to sign up for your home to be powered by solar. This would be done in the form of leased equipment. If you decide to sell your home, the solar lease will transfer with the property.
The second way to go solar is to invest in solar. By purchasing your solar system, you may be eligible for federal tax credits, local tax credits and a lesser-known financial benefit known as SRECs (Solar Renewable Energy Certificates). SRECs are a type of tradable environmental commodity that represents the environmental benefits of one megawatt-hour of electricity generated from a solar photovoltaic (PV) system.
In some jurisdictions, utilities and other electricity suppliers are required to generate a certain percentage of their electricity from renewable sources like solar PV. To meet these requirements, they can either generate renewable energy themselves or purchase SRECs from owners of solar PV systems.
When a solar PV system generates one megawatt-hour of electricity, it generates one SREC. The SREC can then be sold on a market or traded with other entities, such as utilities or other electricity suppliers.
By purchasing SRECs, utilities and other electricity suppliers can meet their renewable energy requirements without having to invest in solar PV systems themselves. At the same time, owners of solar PV systems can earn revenue by selling their SRECs on the market, providing an additional incentive to invest in solar energy.
